Remember the Simple Days of Reading Reach back in your memories, and remember how you read books. As a chid, as a teen, as a young adult, then now. Which book, when you see the title again, springs a memory back to life, reminding you how intensely you fell into that story and didnt want to climb out? I built a tree house for my grandsons second birthday. Yeah, I know its a little over-the- top nuts, but I designed it and had it built so its a place hell retreat to long into college. Right now its all about climbing the stairs and peering at the tree limbs and over at the chickens. In a few years, itll be about Swiss Family Robinson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or something along the line of Maximum Ride. Im running power to it in the future so that, yes, he can drag his laptop up there and maybe even spend the night, maybe bring his friends along. While I have a selfish motive, that of having him around more, I did it because what kid hasnt wished for a tree house? On Facebook, I showed pictures of the house (see one at the top of this newsletter cool, huh?), and was dumbfounded at the 200+ responses from adults. Men and women who recalled their tree houses, or pined over never having one. So I asked them why theres such an attraction to tree houses? Privacy, a place to read, a place to write, a place to feel closer to nature. If we reach back again in those reading memories mentioned earlier, thats what we wanted from the time we could read Dick and Jane books. Its an escape into our deep, true selves, gifting ourselves with permission to reach far. That is what a book is supposed to do. Sometimes, in our frenzy to learn how to publish, or our yearning to make money, we forget that feeling were supposed to be offering to readers. The Civil War was not the defeat of a hopeless rebellion. The Confederates had legitimate opportunity to win independence, but they failed to capitalize on it. The South’s chances at victory were not remote; rather they could expect to win. The ultimate cause of the South’s failure was a lack of aggression in all aspects. The two times the Confederates attacked the North at Antietam and Gettysburg, the results were catastrophic because of a lack of strategy. An offensive plan of war does not necessarily mean charging right at an opponent, who in this case had more than three times the number of men as the Confederates. Rather, an effective form of offense would be to attack northern factories, farms, and cities. The confederacy had the ability to persuade these states to secede in 1861 when Presid ent Lincoln ordered supplies to be brought to Fort Sumter in South Carolina. This made the South look like the aggressors in the war rather than the north, and persuaded the Border States not to secede as they felt their lifestyle was not going to be ruined by the north. Theme of Deception in Much Ado About Nothing Each of the main characters in Much Ado About Nothing is the victim of deception, and it is because they are deceived that they act in the ways that they do. Although the central deception is directed against Claudio in an attempt to destroy his relationship with Hero, it is the deceptions involving Beatrice and Benedick which provides the plays dramatic focus. Applying the why to note taking and time management and the other 4 skills I find helpful helps me clarify what I’m doing. Asking me these questions every day and trying to make solutions for them help me and will help anyone else. The important facts I learned about each of these skills in that they are not only helpful in school but at home and the workplace to. Note taking can be used anywhere even at home or work. All of these skills will help you become a better individual and allow you to create a better sense of who you are and how you learn. In time management you have ask yourself questions so that you can fit everything in your schedule. I plan to use my note taking skills in all my classes and outside of class so that I can review all of the information I need to every day right after I have a lecture or after work so I don’t forget my job duties. There is no such thing as too much studying and reviewing and reviewing makes things less cloudy so you have fewer questions to ask yourself. I’ll use my time management skills to better schedule due dates and test schedules so they bite my from behind and so I won’t forget about planning time for work and studying so I can make a decent grade on my final exams or important tests. Reading my information over and over will help my comprehend it better and leave less room for cloudiness and allow myself to have less and less questions about the information I need to learn so I can make a better grade on my tests and other assignments. I plan to do everything differently such as taking notes and studying a lot more physically. I plan to apply as much energy into my reviewing as much as I do in sports or in other activities. Reviewing and reviewing will help me understand things better and allow myself to be a better person and student. I plan to manage my time better and allow myself to create better schedules to get important things done without sacrificing time for unimportant things. These skills will affect my life tremendously. Not only will it make me a better student but make things a lot easier. Fate In Romeo And Juliet Two households, both alike in dignity, / In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, / From ancient grudge brakes to new mutiny, / Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. / From forth the fatal lions of these foes / A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life; / Whose misadventured piteous overthrows / Doth with their death bury their parent's strife. / The fearful passage of their death-marked love, / And the continuance of their parent's rage, / Which, but their children's end, naught could remove... -The Prologue, Romeo and Juliet Fate plays a major role in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The prologue describes Romeo's and Juliet's fate, which we see come up many times later on in the play. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet realize they cannot exist in such reality and that a tragic fate is inevitable. The two families, the Montagues and the Capulets continue being rivals all the way to the end of the play until the inevitable event takes its place. In the play, there are many events that prove that the fate predicted in the prologue will come true. Even as early as the first scene of the play, we already see some evidence to support the prologue. [Romeo]...And makes himself and artificial night. (I, i, 38) This passage can be seen as the foreshadowing of Romeo's suicide. Another line said by Montague, which is Unless good council may the cause remove (I, i, 140), also is evidence of Romeo's tragedy. In the first act, Romeo is introduced. His great sadness is shown right away and the theme of love is seen as well. Through Romeo's mellow mood we see how desperate he is for love. Romeo is in love with Juliet, who is the daughter of an enemy to the house of Montagues. Fate is definitely involved here, and this innocent love is the first step in a chain of events that lead to the fate driven tragedy. In the same scene, Tybalt is infuriated with Romeo. He is ready to kill him and believes that Romeo is his main enemy. Tybalt. This, by his voice, should be a Montague Fetch me my rapier, boy. What, dares the slave Come hither, covered with an antic face, To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin, To strike him dead I hold not a sin. (I, vi, lines 54-59) And to make the situation even worse, Tybalt, says the following to his father, intending to show that he is not joking and that he is going to try and kill Romeo: I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall, now seeming sweet; convert to bitt'rest gall. (I, vi, lines 91-92) The rage of the two families is shown and also fate becomes more vivid and death is already foreshadowed. It is very important to emphasize at this point that the love between Romeo and Juliet cannot exist because of the rage between the two families. Fate is already taking its place. And this particular event, the first acquaintance between Romeo and Juliet, has started the chain of tragic events that will eventually bring peace to the streets of Verona. Here is another passage which underlines the effect of Romeo's and Juliet's deaths: For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love. Many times there are small reminders between the lines of the tragic fate the play is heading tow ards. Such one is this: Friar. Lets start with a plant that has a built-in first aid kit. Bandagers Milkweed is so named because of the milky white juice that seeps out when the plant is broken off or cut. When the juice dries, it serves as a bandage covering the exposed area. The juice is also important because it acts as a poisonous deterrent to any insects that might try to feed on the plant. One exception is the Monarch butterfly which is immune to the effects of the poison. Milkweed plants are the only plants young Monarch caterpillars will eat. Chokers Strangler Figs get their name because they actually choke the life out of their host. They are found in tropical rainforests around the world. They grow from the top to the bottom of a tree with the help of animals. For example, a bird may drop a fig seed on the branch of a tree. Once the fig plant starts to grow, it sends its roots to the ground, which then anchor into the soil and completely surround the tree. Eventually, the host tree will die because it will no longer be able to get enough water or food. Deadly Nightshade Deadly nightshade plants, sometimes called devil’s berries, are named so because they are very toxic and deadly. The toxins from these plants can cause delirium and hallucinations. Their poison can also be fatal as it only takes consuming a few berries to kill a human. The berries from this plant were once used to make poison-tipped arrows. Dolls Eyes Dolls eyes plants are very unusual looking plants with berries that resemble eyeballs. While the entire plant is poisonous, eating berries from this plant could lead to cardiac arrest and death. Dolls eyes berries contain toxins that sedate cardiac muscles and can stop the heart. Birds however, are immune to the plant poisons. VampiresDodder plants attach to their host and suck off food and water. Dodder seedlings send out stems that search for other plants. Once a host is found, the dodder will cling to and penetrate the stems of the host. It will then grow and remain attached to its victim. Dodders are considered harmful parasites because they often spread plant diseases. Werewolf Plant Wolfsbane, also known as devils helmet, is an extremely toxic plant. Poisons from this plant at one time were used in hunting animals, including wolves. The toxins are quickly absorbed through the skin. Wolfsbane was also thought to ward off werewolves. White Ghosts Indian Pipes are tubular shaped plants with white flowers. The white color of the plant gives it a ghostly appearance. They grow in shaded places and receive all of their food from a fungus that lives in their roots.
