The arrival of violent video games and the media covering recent mass killings, an emotional debate has developed about the impact of video games on aggressive, violent, and criminal behavior. Findings from certain research are contradictory: some studies show an increase in aggressiveness, while others suggest a decrease in criminality. The increase in the diversity of game platforms makes playing violent video games easier to play, which is a source of concern. Women Suffrage - 1050 Words

The struggle to achieve equal rights for women is often thought to have begun, in the English-speaking world, with the publication of Mary Wollstonecrafts A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). During the 19th century, as male suffrage was gradually extended in many countries, women became increasingly active in the quest for their own suffrage. Not until 1893, however, in New Zealand, did women achieve suffrage on the national level. Australia followed in 1902, but American, British, and Canadian women did not win the same rights until the end of World War I. The demand for the enfranchisement of American women was first seriously formulated at the Seneca Falls Convention (1848). The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Netherlands granted suffrage in 1917; Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Sweden in 1918; and Germany and Luxembourg in 1919. Spain extended the ballot to women in 1931, but France waited until 1944 and Belgium, Italy, Romania, and Yugoslavia until 1946. Switzerland finally gave women the vote in 1971, and women remained disenfranchised in Liechtenstein until 1984. In Canada women won the vote in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan in 1916; after federal suffrage was achieved in 1918, the other provinces followed suit, the last being Quebec in 1940. Among the Latin American countries, national womens suffrage was granted in 1929 in Ecuador, 1932 in Brazil, 1939 in El Salvador, 1942 in the Dominican Republic, 1945 in Guatemala, and 1946 in Argentina. In India during the period of British rule, women were enfranchised on the same terms as men under the Government of India Act of 1935; following independence, the Indian Constitution, adopted in 1949 and inaugurated in 1950, established adult suffrage. In the Philippines women received the vote in 1937, in Japan in 1945, in China in 1947, and in Indonesia in 1955. Education Makes People Easy to Lead but Difficult to Drive Essay Example For Students

Education Makes People Easy to Lead but Difficult to Drive Essay Education makes people easy to lead but difficult to drive, easy to govern but impossible to enslave Discuss I This is a statement based on the values of education but it refers to one aspect of education, namely, the citizenship value. Education has of course many aims like earning bread and butter, shelter . Clothing and a good life. The last concerns man as a member of a society. Except In a dictatorial society. The ordinary citizen is, theoretically at least, equal to every other citizen and enjoys equal rights. This equality enjoins equality of Justice and equality of opportunity. No position in the public life can be said to be far from his reach because of his birth or creed provided of course he deserves it by education and qualification. Len every enlightened modem government, emphasis Is laid on the education of Its citizens. Up to a certain age education Is made compulsory so that boys and girls get the benefit of It. They get enlightened and they are willing to obey and, given the chance, are ready to rule. Since almost every government in the world is governed by the representatives of the people, these representatives must be educated enough to shoulder the accessibility that falls on them. That is why one British Minister said, Let us educate our masters meaning that the people who vote their representatives for the highest legislative body of the country must be educated. Education helps them realize their responsibilities while they appreciate their rights. They will be able to weigh their opinions before jumping into conclusions. They will know how to respect the opinion of others while they may stick to their own. They will remember there is always another side to a question when they differ. They have a right to say l beg to differ. That is a sign of a civilized man. At the same time he will never allow himself to be treated as a dumb, driven cattle. He does not like being driven. In whatever station he finds himself, the educated man can easily fit In. Real sign of education Is that when he reaches an exalted position In life he never loses his head, when he Is in a humble position he never breaks his head either. Thus an educated man shows equanimity. He will sail in fair weather or foul. They know the value of leadership in any set up and they too know that to become a leader one must have certain desirable qualities. When a right leader is found, it is easier to follow him. Thus history Is replete with examples where a down trodden or fallen people have followed a leader-People may follow a leader with almost religious fervor but If the people are not educated enough their loyalty shakes and wavers. There is a glaring example of this type in India where people followed Gandhi]xis footsteps and when he left the scene he has become almost a legend only to be worshipped at times. His erstwhile followers have changed loyalties. In this case it is the miracle because of a faith akin to religion and not because of education. Had the people been properly educated, the present debacle would never have been there. In other words, when people are caudate t I Is easier to lead teem Decease teeny Know ten alertness Ana they walk where others may limp. It is easy to lead an enlightened mass of people than a mob. The Roman mob wanted Brutes tragically enough to be Caesar and later on when Antonym worked on their minds, they called the same Brutes traitor. .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .postImageUrl , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:hover , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:visited , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:active { border:0!important; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:active , .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12 .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u49c2a57bec53a551176cc22c58eeab12:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Why IQ Tests Dont Test Intelligence (721 words) EssayAn educated person would follow, without being driven. He knows his limits as well as that of others, so if he senses that he is being driven he revolts. No force of government or the shackles of law can break his back. Physically he may be paralyzed but his spirit would be strong. Since democracy is a government by consent, the people should be well educated so that leadership among them may become possible. Here we should not confuse between an educated and a literary society. There are examples where such a paradox exists but it is only an exception rather than the rule. A really educated man is glad to follow but he would certainly resents being forced to follow. Let is easy to govern an educated group of people for they know he need for such governments for the smooth functioning of the society. They know the value of give and take. They know the value of the rule of the law. They know there must be somebody to govern, even though the authority comes from the people. They will never allow themselves to be enslaved. Their rights are sacrosanct and anybody encroaching it is not tolerated. Still there are some societies where in spite of education, allow themselves to be enslaved. These are historical accidents and the future historian may be able to find a clue to it. How long this state of things can continue, one cannot prophesy. It is safe to bet that such an artificial condition cannot continue to dominate forever. I If people are educated, they can see the value of a good idea, even if it seems undesirable on the surface, like the need to pay more taxes if there really is one. They can understand the argument. Leading implies that you have willing followers. But if you wish to deceive them, to take them where they wouldnt otherwise go, being educated makes them harder to do this to. Bush wanted to take America to war and gave weak arguments in support of it that most of the world rejected, such as insisting that there were Whims that Hans Bill ND the UN said were not there, or that Hussein was in league with all Qaeda when it was common knowledge that they were enemies. But the unsophisticated and non- analytical American people swallowed it easily. When France and Germany would not, Americans were incensed. The Americans were comparatively easy to drive and enslave, but the French and Germans avoiding that with common sense. Sorry if this offends anyone, but its history now, not opinion, and its a perfect example for this question One can conclude finally that education must be there for leadership qualities and good governing.

The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini Essay Example For Students

The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini Essay Perfect heroes are unrealistic in literature because even though they seem ideal, the characters become flat and unrelatable. Therefore, authors often add other dimensions to characters that reveal their personality flaws and mistakes. Authors are able to use these dimensions to both relate the characters but also teach the readers life lessons from the characters mistakes. For example, in The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini crafts multiple ambiguous characters who are good people that make major mistakes. By contrasting these characters to the more pure characters, Hosseini is able to show both the ideal life to live and the ways to do that. We will write a custom essay on The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In The Kite Runner, Amir and his father, Baba, display lives of contradictions while Hassan and Rahim Khan live lives of purity. Amir has many flaws as a child. However, he becomes a very moral adult. His character shows how mistakes and the resultant guilt take over lives even if the mistakes were made as a child. This guilt began when Amir and Hassan were young children because they were always best friends but the cultural stereotypes against Hassan and his servant status made Amir never look at him as an equal. While this is understandable for a young boy, Amir is also extremely jealous of Hassan and his relationship with Baba. Amir feels like Baba should love him more because he is Baba’s son. In the end, this jealousy and lack of respect leads to Amir not protecting Hassan when he witnesses Hassan being raped. However, to add to this situation, Hassan was running after a kite for Amir. He was only in trouble because he wanted to give Amir a gift. His steadfast loyalty for Amir throughout their entire childhood ended when Hassan was raped because he later moved out of the house.. .better person. He is definitely not perfect after he moves to America but he definitely seems to value his son more. Before America, he did not seem to think much of Amir at all but through all of their travels, Baba seems to trust him and think of Amir as more of a man. However, the true immorality of these characters would not be as evident without the addition of characters such as Hassan and Rahim Khan because both of these men are able to show what a pure heart should look like. Neither man is perfect because Hassan leaves the house instead of trying to reconcile his emotions and Rahim Khan keeps the lie from Amir but both seem to genuinely care about their friends. Most of all, both men seem to put others before themselves at all costs. In The Kite Runner, juxtaposing characters and ambiguous characters are used to show the nature of guilt and decision making.

Land registration act 1925 and its influence.

Land registration act 1925 and its influence. Method of legal transferring of land went through significant changes after the land registration act 1925 which came in to effect since 1 January 1926. According s1 of the act only two ways are possible in transferring ownership. Remember the Simple Days of Reading

Remember the Simple Days of Reading Reach back in your memories, and remember how you read books. As a chid, as a teen, as a young adult, then now. Which book, when you see the title again, springs a memory back to life, reminding you how intensely you fell into that story and didnt want to climb out? I built a tree house for my grandsons second birthday. Yeah, I know its a little over-the- top nuts, but I designed it and had it built so its a place hell retreat to long into college. Right now its all about climbing the stairs and peering at the tree limbs and over at the chickens. In a few years, itll be about Swiss Family Robinson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or something along the line of Maximum Ride. Im running power to it in the future so that, yes, he can drag his laptop up there and maybe even spend the night, maybe bring his friends along. While I have a selfish motive, that of having him around more, I did it because what kid hasnt wished for a tree house? On Facebook, I showed pictures of the house (see one at the top of this newsletter cool, huh?), and was dumbfounded at the 200+ responses from adults. Men and women who recalled their tree houses, or pined over never having one. So I asked them why theres such an attraction to tree houses? Privacy, a place to read, a place to write, a place to feel closer to nature. If we reach back again in those reading memories mentioned earlier, thats what we wanted from the time we could read Dick and Jane books. Its an escape into our deep, true selves, gifting ourselves with permission to reach far. That is what a book is supposed to do. Sometimes, in our frenzy to learn how to publish, or our yearning to make money, we forget that feeling were supposed to be offering to readers. Maybe we need to climb up into a tree house to remember.

CCTV argument supporting the idea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

CCTV argument supporting the idea - Essay Example Undoubtedly, the expansion of globalisation, rise in societal complexities and new forms of criminal activities have accumulatively given rise to this need. Increasing urbanisation has exacerbated the trend towards privacy, leading to the essentiality of verifying identity. The growing frequency of crime has further emerged as one of the major reasons for both international corporations and government to increase video surveillance through CCTV (Ratcliffe & Taniguchi, 2006). Emphasising these aspects, the aim of this essay is to highlight problems arising due to the increasing number of CCTV cameras in the modern society and develop rational understanding in this regard. Need of CCTV Cameras With the advent of globalisation in the modern world, keeping track of regular activities performed within a society has become very essential for the government of any country to ensure national security. CCTVs are used not only in security purposes but also in research where people are continuo usly observed to understand human behaviour in different situations and circumstances. Increased mobility both locally and internationally has further given rise to a stranger society, where social control based on cognitive understanding matters significantly. Risk management has also become the leading mode of reasoning for both international organisations and government organisations, which has further increased the use of CCTV cameras. In the area of criminal justice, new ideas have given way to more humble defensive responses that focus on opportunity reduction, situational avoidance and risk management wherein CCTV can be regarded as a vital part of the trend towards the effective identification of punishing offenders, managing prisoners and handling rehabilitation centres. There are records that show CCTV is more effective in some context than other technology gadgets in identifying crimes. Reports published on the effectiveness of using CCTV have revealed that it had a signi ficant impact on decreasing vehicle crimes, robbery and theft. However, no such significant impact of using CCTV was seen in case of violence or felony (Damjanovski, 2005). Researches further depict that identification of the real offender is possible through the CCTV cameras, which in turn plays a vital role as evidence in any criminal prosecution. Though proper evidence has not yet been obtained in the violence sector, the cameras have been observed to record suspicious behaviours and therefore play a pivotal role in obstructing the conduct of any probable crime to ensure security of a given population. However, the effectiveness of CCTV is often affirmed as subjected to constant monitoring, which could only be done in a reliable manner by a computer programme that searches for unusual activities and highlights it for further investigation. Notably, to increase efficiencies in identifying crime and protecting the society with the assistance of CCTV, innovative software programmes, known as Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS) are being developed, which can predict the occurrence of crime quite effectively (Ulkemen, 2009). For instance, in a recent crime activity of the â€Å"Boston Marathon Bombing†, the CCTV installed in a departmental store helped the FBI team in identifying the concerned perpetrator of the crime. CCTV has also shown significant contribution in controlling hacking

Journal entry (economics topic) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Journal entry (economics topic) - Essay Example erefore, given that in times of economic crisis there is decreased tax revenue it became important to establish measures to resolve decreased revenues as a result of decline in profits, incomes, consumptions or increase in tax evasion (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian, 2011). VAT has also increased its relevancy to bridge the gap that government have in national debt. VAT is administered effectively and has enabled some country reduce their national debt without raising the direct taxes on capital and labor (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian, 2011). Therefore, VAT has been a powerful tool that enables economies address the macroeconomic issue such as unemployment and investment without disrupting the operation of a country. In conclusion, the government may increase or decrease the charge on VAT to address the economic crisis of the day rather than resulting to other measures to increase tax receipt. However, there are macroeconomic consequences with little severity compared to other alternative ways of raising revenue. VAT has become one the largest indirect tax and considered as a tax for the future. It is successful and does not burden one source only as it is shared among producers and users (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian,

Speaking Ethically Essay -- Literary Analysis, Dinesh D’Souza

The 5 considerations for speaking ethically are: â€Å"have a clear and responsible goal† (p. 51); â€Å"use sound evidence and reasoning† (p. 52); â€Å"be sensitive to and tolerant of differences† (p. 53); â€Å"be honest† (p. 53); and â€Å"don’t plagiarize†. The three considerations for listening ethically are: â€Å"communicate your expectations and feedback: (p. 57); â€Å"be sensitive to and tolerant of differences† (p. 58); and â€Å"listen critically† (p. 58). The first consideration for speaking ethically exists in order to establish trust with the audience. The audience should be aware of what the point of the speech is, what they are going to be persuaded about. Personally I feel that Dinesh D’Souza violated this consideration by labeling his speech â€Å"Christianity and Islam: is religion the problem?† It was excruciatingly clear that he wasn’t honestly examining the advantages and disadvantages (pragmatic effects, clearly theological effects would have been a different discussion) of religion in society, he was stating his opinion that atheists cause millions of deaths per year, Muslims cause thousands of deaths per year, while Christians advance the world and prevent deaths. Thus, the title of his speech was misleading, and according to the book, unethical. The second consideration for speaking ethically exists so that opinions may be accepted or dismissed on their own merits. The idea is that sifting through false ideas is a good thing, and the best method for sifting through false ideas is for each individual to form his or her own opinion. I believe Dinesh D’Souza violated this consideration with the following paraphrased argument: â€Å"President Obama’s father wants to crush corporations under the heel of government; the title of a book written by Preside... ...o hold. In other words, the opinion is worthwhile because there is an issue that is important. The third step is satisfy. It exists in order to show that the valuable opinion can solve the need. The fourth step is visualization. It exists in order to help the audience visualize the issue, and the outcomes that will occur because of the issue not being fixed. The fifth step is action. It exists in order demonstrate how the audience personally can help fix the issue. For example, step 3 may be â€Å"schools need increased funding† and step 5 might be â€Å"you individually volunteering at school sporting events lets the school spend money on other things†. The sixth step is rebuttal. It exists in order to be a straw-man argument, albeit possibly with more honesty. This step allows the speaker to honestly, or dishonestly, propose other possible solutions and dismiss them. The University Center For British Art - 1683 Words

In the Yale Center for British Art, one can find a beautiful map titled: â€Å"The Description of Jarsey a(nn)o 1600.† One trait that stands out with this map compared to others drafted the 16th and early 17th centuries is the exquisite detail depicted in the topographical features. According to a display featured in an exhibition of the map, this is â€Å"from the collection of George Legge, first Baron Dartmouth; previously in the English Royal map collection† (Yale Center, From the Collection). One might wonder why a map with such extensive detail would be in the hands of the Royal Collection, and thus why it was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I. According to R. A. Skelton: â€Å"it is not difficult to see how, in the course of business, some maps†¦show more content†¦This could be a major factor in why the island was so heavily contested for hundreds of years; the island is arguably a great launching point for the French Navy to attack the British. With c ommunication during this time period being relatively slow given the lack of modern technology, it would have been easy for the island to be captured by the French without mainland Britain immediately knowing. Thus, there was a great incentive on the part of the British to keep this island well defended so as to protect it from any potential French attacks. Such an assertion can be bolstered not only by the fact that Queen Elizabeth I decided to build a castle off the southern coast of the island in 1594, which could have been done to provide ample protection of the south coastline, but also the production of the map itself in 1600 which is now held by the Yale Center for British Art. There are many features of this map that should be acknowledged. First, there are twelve parishes noted. Within these parishes, there are 2057 households noted, all distributed within the map by town. Some churches, windmills and other landmarks are denoted on the island with pictures and names of said places. Looking past this basic information, the more detailed material begins in the southern part of the map. While topographical information is scattered throughout the map, the majority of this information is marked solely on the southern side of Jersey.
